Hotels can be mysterious places, especially at midnight when everyone’s fallen asleep and the atmosphere changes. In the bowels of the hotel--places you will never see--it can get really creepy.
It was the night shift and Rebecca, the manager, had left Charlie-deputy manager-in charge whilst she escaped for a romantic break with her husband. Charlie had Anna-Head Receptionist-for company, much to their mutual dissatisfaction.
Already spooked after Tony told them a grisly tale of murder at a nearby hotel, Anna was further unsettled by the disappearance of the security guard Jagdeep.
Anna had been sent to check the self-service bar. On her way back, she became convinced that she'd heard a guest murder his wife in one of the bedrooms. Charlie refused to take this seriously, despite having seen the guest, Mr. Johnson, arguing with his wife earlier in the lobby.
As the night wore on, Mr. Johnson's erratic behavior - like sneaking his big suitcases out in the middle of the night - worried Anna more and more. Anxious to find out the truth, she snooped around in his room, and was appalled to discover blood streaks in the bath and a bag of rope, tape and rubber gloves, and more horrific, a message written on the bathroom mirror, saying “help me”. With all these, Charlie still wouldn’t believe her.
Down on the ground floor, Charlie discovered Jagdeep lying in a toilet cubicle, seriously ill. Later, Anna was sent to deliver a bottle of whiskey to a sheik, who was staying at the hotel after buying antique pistols at a Sotheby's auction. He had asked Rebecca to look after the pistols previously. In the sheik’s suite, the strange behavior of one of the sheik’s wives puzzled Anna. Then , Anna was terrified when the elevator stopped twice and nobody was out there. Anna pressed the “G” button again and took a deep breath, trying hard to calm herself down. The door was about to close when suddenly a man’s hand popped in. It turned out to be Mr. Johnson who tried to make her accompany him to his room. Frightened as she was ,Anna grasped the chance and ran all the way downstairs for her life.
Seeing how scared she was, Charlie finally agreed to confront Mr. Johnson, but when they slipped into his room they found a young, drunk woman tied up in his wardrobe. Before they had time to carry the woman out, Mr. Johnson came back. The moment he entered the room, Anna smashed a vase on his head. And Charlie finally decided to phone Rebecca. The no-nonsense manager quickly got to the bottom of things.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnson had been attempting to steal the pistols bought by the sheik, which, according to Mr. Johnson, had been donated by his grandfather to the museum. To do this, they had abducted one of the sheik's wives - the young woman tied up in the wardrobe - and Mrs. Johnson had switched places with her so that she could get close to the safe in the sheik’s suite, where they had thought the pistols were kept.
Finally and thankfully, with the sun rising over the hotel, a degree of normality returned.
